Opposition meeting on Karunanidhi's first death anniversary
06-August-2019
The DMK has invited leaders of various opposition parties for a memorial meeting to mark the first death anniversary of its party President and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Wednesday.
Karunanidhi died on August 7, 2018.
Among those invited are West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamta Banerjee, Puducherry Chief Minister V.Narayanasamy of the Congress, Telugu Desam Party chief and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and National Conference chief and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah - though his presence is doubtful owing to the situation in J&K.
Leaders of other parties like Congress, the MDMK, the VCK, the CPI, the CPI-M and others are also expected to take part.
While Banerjee will unveil the statue of Karunanidhi installed in the office of DMK's newspaper 'Murasoli', leaders are expected to participate in the meeting scheduled to be held here in the evening.
The opposition leaders are expected to condemn the Central government for its decision to bifurcate J&K into two Union Territories and for scrapping of Article 370 of the Constitution that conferred special status on the erstwhile state.
Interestingly, TDP leader Naidu has welcomed the Central governments move while DMK President M.K. Stalin, Banerjee and others have opposed to it. IANS
