Nirbhaya case: Delhi HC to hold special Sunday hearing
01-February-2020
The Delhi High Court will hold a special hearing on Sunday as it issued notices to the Tihar Jail authorities and the four death row convicts in the Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case over a plea moved by the Centre against a stay on the death penalty.
Justice Suresh Kumar Kait has issued notices to the Director General, Tihar Jail and Superintendent of Tihar Jail and also the four death row convicts over the plea filed by the government.
During the course of the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta argued that the convicts can be hanged separately.
He further argued, "Once a person is aware that his fate is death penalty, any delay in execution is dehumanising. They should be executed immediately."
He also said that all the accused are ironically urging the court to understand the value of a human life forgetting that the victim also had a life. The court is aware of what happened. This is one case that has shaken the conscience of the society.
"This case will go down in the history as one of the rare cases where accused classically abused the process and sought to try the patience of the nation," Mehta said.
The court has now fixed the matter for hearing on Sunday at 3 p.m.
